Chinese citizens applying for a UK marriage or fiancée visa must meet certain requirements including relationship proof, financial threshold, and English language ability.
The United Kingdom offers two primary visa options for Chinese nationals who wish to join their British partners: the Fiancée Visa and the Spouse (Marriage) Visa. Both visa types are part of the family migration route and fall under the UK Immigration Rules Appendix FM, which focuses on family reunification.
The UK Fiancée Visa is ideal for Chinese nationals who are engaged to a British citizen or a person settled in the UK. It allows entry to the UK for six months, during which the couple must get married. After the marriage takes place, the applicant can switch to a UK Spouse Visa from within the UK.
To be eligible, the couple must demonstrate a genuine and subsisting relationship, have met in person, and intend to live together permanently in the UK after marriage. The sponsor must meet the minimum financial requirement of earning at least £18,600 annually (more if dependent children are included). The applicant must also provide suitable accommodation details and evidence of their intention to marry within six months of arrival in the UK.
For Chinese nationals already married to a British citizen or settled partner, the Spouse Visa allows a 2.5-year stay in the UK, with the option to extend and apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after five years. The Spouse Visa has similar requirements to the Fiancée Visa, including proof of a genuine relationship, financial eligibility, English language proficiency (A1 level for the first application), and suitable accommodation.
Applications must be submitted online through the official UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal. After submission, biometric enrollment and supporting document verification must be completed at a UK Visa Application Centre (VAC) in China — such as in Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou. Most Chinese applicants use the Priority Visa Service to receive a decision faster, usually within 30 working days.
Many Chinese applicants face delays or refusals due to insufficient documentation or failure to clearly demonstrate the relationship’s authenticity. Submitting translated and certified documents, financial evidence such as payslips and bank statements, and photographs or communication records can significantly improve the chances of success.
Upon arrival, holders of a Fiancée Visa must marry within six months and then apply to switch to a Spouse Visa. Spouse Visa holders may work and study in the UK and begin their path toward settlement and British citizenship.
It is highly recommended to seek professional guidance during the application process to avoid errors and delays.
